Charming Mr. Sugar
The charming Mr. Sugar

So, Sugar’s journey continues!

To re-cap: this beautiful, striking 2.5 year old Dogo/Doberman mix with hearing and vision differences first came to South Pacific County Humane Society in August 2021. During his stay, a combination of stress and trauma coupled with his sensory impairments led to a deterioration in his behavior and well-being. Sugar developed severe reactivity to cars. At this point, the future looked bleak for Sugar.

A dedicated group of staff and volunteers began looking for a solution. They found a trainer willing to take Sugar for a train and board placement. These same folks also did a fundraiser, and raised enough funds for Sugar to initially go and board & train with Chelsea (trainer). The transformation had begun! Sugar showed strong signs of developing the coping strategies needed to manage in our busy world.

SPCHS then reached out to the community to raise additional funds to continue Sugar’s rehabilitation. The community responded, and we have been able to keep Sugar in his train and board placement. This has enabled him to develop his resilience and coping mechanisms and become an adoptable dog. It’s been an amazing journey!

Alongside this training, SPCHS have been busy with their rescue partners promoting Sugar and trying to find his forever home. There has been much interest, in fact just a week ago we thought we had found him a home. Unfortunately, through no fault of Sugar, this fell through at the last minute.

So, we continue to search for Sugar’s family/person. Chelsea continues to work with our boy, developing his skills as well as providing a wonderful temporary home for him. She recently said of him; ‘Sugar continues to do really well. He’s very chill when left alone, and also loves to cuddle and get love. Sugar prefers shorter walks where he can do a lot of watching the world!’ In addition to working with him, Chelsea has kindly reduced her fees twice, instead donating time to Sugar, for which we are so grateful!

Despite the fee reduction, our funds are running low for Sugar. We would hate to bring him back to the shelter, as this would be such a backward step for him. We are therefore reaching out again to ask for funds to cover Sugar’s July and August fees, so he can stay with Chelsea. Here he will be able to continue to flourish until we find his forever home.

Thanks for your support of Sugar. Please continue to share his page so we can pay for him to stay at the training facility until he finds a foster or forever home, which is the #1 goal. He is SO adoptable now, with proper manners. Where else are you going to find a gorgeous white dog that is already trained and whose trainer will teach you all you need to know to keep him that way?
