This Christmas season is a great time to help those in need (Both Human and Animal)

Pet Report by Rod Vetter

The Shelter had two great events this past weekends to help out the community during the Christmas season.

Nick and his boy enjoying leash-free play

Nick and his boy enjoying leash-free play

The first event was the building of a fence at a home to get “Nick” the dog off of a chain he has been attached to his whole life. Volunteers from SPCHS partnered with Fences for Fido from Portland to fence in the back yard and built a new doghouse. There is nothing more joyful than to see a dog who has never been free to take his first run around the yard. PHOTOS. We hope to partner with this Portland group throughout the New Year. You too, can volunteer for these fence-building events by contacting SPCHS at 642-1180.

We also had our annual Pet Pics with Santa, in partnership with the Dennis Company, on Saturday. People and animals kept Santa very busy for 4 hours. The final tally included 111 dogs, 4 cats and assorted family members jumping into the pictures. One set of pics involved 10 Chihuahuas and 2 doxies all dressed up for Christmas.  Everyone, including volunteers, had a great time. Our thanks to Dennis Company once again, for their dedication to the animals of SPCHS.  PHOTOS.

The Shelter has a great selection of small dogs right now. We added a Border Collie and six Chihuahuas on Friday. All have been fixed, had all of their shots, and are micro-chipped. This is a great opportunity for early birds. MEET THE PETS.

We always have an assortment of adult cats and kittens. Featured in the lobby is Knight, a large black neutered male who is very friendly but is afraid of dogs. Turk, a big grey and white male, likes to talk to everyone who comes to the Shelter. If we open the window he stops talking and looks out.  He would be a really a great cat to have for companionship. MEET THE PETS.

Next Saturday, December 15th, we are having Christmas with Critters party at the Shelter.  Join us to celebrate all the animals that we have saved over the years and all the animals that are in our Shelter at this moment, waiting for their chance at a “forever home”. Please stop by the Shelter between 11am and 3pm to drop off your donation of canned chicken, salt-free tuna, a blanket to snuggle, or a toy to play with and receive a gift from our pets to you.  The collected food will be cooked into special Christmas dinners for the dogs and cats.

As always, your donations are always welcome as in canned dog/cat food and dry dog/cat/kitten food. Paper towels and liquid detergent are always a big hit.  Follow this link for many ways you can help SPCHS.

Many thanks for everyone’s generosity and Happy Holidays to all.

Ilwaco Approves Exotic Pets Ordinance

December 8, 2012

Cat and Iguana Lizard

Chinook Observer:

“ILWACO — Don’t get your feathers ruffled if hens don’t tickle your fancy, the city of Ilwaco approved an ordinance amendment last week that allows residents to keep a variety of species as pets so long as they have proper permitting from city hall.

The amendment became a project for the city council in October after Ilwaco residents Glenn and Hillary Trusty requested permission to keep a bobcat as a house pet.

The ordinance defines a “wild or exotic animal” as non-domesticated species of felines and canines; bears, nonhuman primates and prosimians; the order crocodilia (such as alligators and crocodiles); and snake species that are “capable of inflicting serious physical harm or death to human beings.”

Residents will now be able to apply for a non-transferable permit to keep such a pet as long as the city is provided with sufficient evidence that the animal would have a secure enclosure; that the premises are posted with signage that warns of the animal; proof of proper insurance ($50,000 or more); a $75 permit fee; and copies of all federal and state required documentation.

A private citizen caught possessing or maintaining a wild or exotic animal without a permit could be fined $250 per day of violation, and, depending on the circumstances, could be forced to euthanize the animal.

The decision follows the council’s September approval of an amended livestock ordinance, which allows citizens to apply for permit to keep up to six chickens for non-commercial use inside the city limits.”

Great Dane and Tegu Lizard

We’ve had chinchillas, ferrets, hedgehogs, rabbits, birds, tarantulas, snakes, lizards, turtles, hamsters, rats, mice, guinea pigs, geckos, frogs, crabs –you name it– come through SPCHS over the years, and occasionally also wild animals and goats or other small livestock ‘pets.’  Our mission includes pets of all kinds, although we doubt this change in ordinance will mean an increase in homeless exotic animals locally. When animals come to us that are not legally considered pets, or which we think would be better served by assistance specific to their species or breed, we call on other rescue professionals for help.

The legal line between pet and livestock is a tough one; we’re in the pet business, not the livestock business.  That means there’s not much we can do when it comes to horses, pigs, goats, chickens and other animals classified as livestock, even when they’re also pets, because the laws are different.  Even so, if we can’t jump in ourselves to help directly, we absolutely WILL help you get heard with the proper authorities and/or rescue group when needs arise.  Check out our pages on abuse and neglect complaints for more information.

Several people have inquired about SPCHS’ position on exotic pet ownership.  We’ve not yet made a formal statement when it comes to circuses, exotic or wild animals.  Staff and Board have discussed the pros and cons of wild and exotic animals in human care, and we are generally not in favor for a variety of reasons.  Until we take a position formally, we’ll suffice to leave you with some food for thought:

All the shelter pets want for Thanksgiving are loving homes

Pet Report By Cory McKeown

Kellog - German Shorthaired Pointer

Kellog

For us humans, Thanksgiving is known to be a time when we reflect on our blessings- we are grateful for our families, our health, our warm homes… A common blessing we share with the dogs and cats at the shelter is the blessing of having someone to love. Unfortunately, for some the pets that have been at the shelter for a long time now, this blessing just hasn’t happened.

Some of our dog residents have been lingering at the shelter for weeks, and sometimes even months. “Kellogg”, the handsome German Short-haired Pointer that we have featured several times in this report, is still here, spending his life in a cage. He is a very active, athletic dog- true to the characteristics of his breed. We have noticed that he sometimes does not seem to like or trust men, but is very enamored and downright flirtatious with the women who stop by his cage to say “hello”. He would be a wonderfully protective jogging partner for a single woman- truly a best friend. It would be such a Thanksgiving blessing for him to be out of a cage and in the heart and home of an active, loving woman…

Pumpkin - Calico/Torti Mix

Pumpkin

Several of the kitties have been shelter residents for literally months now. Little “Pumpkin” is a pretty calico that has been here since October of 2011! She is a little shy at times, but would be a great companion in a quiet home. Chatty little “Baby” has been asking shelter visitors to take her home and love her since May, but so far has only been disappointed- over and over again.

Please come and meet some of these unfortunate “long-timers” that have spent so much of their lives here at the shelter. Please come and consider giving them loving homes- the blessing they want more than anything else in their lives…

Come to “Pet Play Day” at Funland Nov. 30th and help support the shelter!

The Epping family, owners of the fantastically fun local arcade, have been wonderful supporters of the South Pacific County Humane Society for years now, and are again “stepping up to the plate” in a very big way to help the homeless shelter animals.

On Friday, November 30, all of the profits from the entire day at Funland will be donated to the shelter- this means that not only can you and your family enjoy a very entertaining time at the arcade, you can help support your local no-kill shelter at the same time!

Funland is open from 12 noon to 10pm daily. Please come enjoy this very important fund-raising event. We are very grateful to the owners of Funland for their loyal support.

Sadly, Patrick and Simon are the lost boys

It seems quite often that people do call or come to the shelter if they are missing a dog- but, unfortunately, not so often with cats. We will get lovely, well-cared for cats in as “strays”, but just looking at them tells us they must belong to someone.

Such is  the case with both Patrick and Simon, both of which have come into the shelter in the last month and sadly, no one has come looking for either one of them.

Patrick is a very large, very plush tuxedo cat that was found in the Seaview area, by the Shell station. He came in wearing a green safety collar, and when he first hit the shelter, he was very outgoing and downright “chatty”. He loved attention and would reach through the bars of his cage to get visitor’s attention. As his time has worn on, though, he has gotten more depressed and quieter, and the longer his people haven’t come to get him, the quieter he gets. Now, rather than being a clown for visitors, he sleeps most of the time…

Simon is a drop-dead gorgeous young seal point Siamese with beautiful sea-blue eyes. He was also found on the peninsula, and came in very clean and well-cared for. He is a large cat, and being crammed into a cage just wasn’t his style! So, we put him in the kitty playroom, and the minute he hit the room, he started telling the other cats his sad story. He gets right in his roommates faces, and doesn’t bat at them, but instead unleashes a barrage of “kitty chatter’ telling everyone that will listen that his people will come for him soon- he really isn’t lost, and blah, blah, blah.

Please, if you are missing either of these beautiful boys, or know who may be missing them, come forward and take them back home! It is obvious someone once loved them both, and they are more than ready to be loved again!

Shelter Wish List

We still have a large population of hungry kittens, and desperately need Purina Kitten Chow to help them thrive- we would be very grateful for kitten  chow donations and canned kitty food to keep our tiny ones healthy and growing.

Cash donations to the Humane Society are always very gratefully received. Because we are very careful with our expenditures and rely on our great volunteers who so kindly  donate their time to the shelter, a very large percentage of cash donations go directly to the care of the animals. Please remember the homeless pets in your holiday giving! Thank you so much.

We call it “Broken Heart Syndrome”

October 15, 2012

PET REPORT by Cory McKeown

You wouldn’t find this phrase by searching through a veterinary medicine book, but at the shelter, we know that this syndrome definitely exists. Basically, it is just as it sounds. When some cats and dogs come in to the shelter, particularly older pets, they often are hit particularly hard by the realization they might have lost the only home they ever knew.

Buffy, Taffy & Rosie

And hit so hard by the thought they may never see the people they loved, that they start “shutting down”. The kitties often stop eating, and hide in the corners of their cages with their heads buried in their paws. Unfortunately, kitties that stop eating, even for a short period of time, can go into a form of liver failure and soon die without heroic measures. The dogs suffering from “Broken Heart Syndrome” can appear the picture of sadness- no wiggling; no tail wagging, no happy barking in greeting.

All shelters encounter “Broken Heart Syndrome” in one form or another- this just happens to be our term for this sad occurrence.  Unfortunately, these three kitties, Rosie, Taffy, and Buffy, are prime candidates for heartbreak. They belonged to a loving woman who recently died of cancer. She was only 58. When she was very sick and knew she wasn’t going to make it, she contacted one of our shelter volunteers, who promised the kitties could come to our shelter when she passed.

When they came to the shelter, we could see they were very upset and bewildered. They just couldn’t figure out just what they had done that might have been bad enough to cause them to lose their loving lady.

Of course, the best “fix” for Broken Heart is a new loving home, which is exactly what we are hoping for these three lovely kitties. Rosie is a pretty Manx calico girl with multiple toes- a “polydactyl” as they say. Her sister Taffy is also a polydactyl calico, but she has a tail, and Buffy is a pretty chubby buff-colored gal with a tail and the usual number of toes.

All three of these kitties are very loving, and would make wonderful companions. We are just hoping they will find their new people soon, before they get too sad. Please come and see these lovely cats, and consider giving them loving homes.  It isn’t every day you have the chance to mend a heart before it is completely broken…

Shelter Wish List

We are in great need of donations of canned cat food and Purina Kitten Chow. Maybe perhaps because of our wonderfully long “Indian summer” this year, we have more cats and kittens than usual at the shelter. Canned food and kitten chow truly help the kitties thrive, and we would very much appreciate these donations. Thank you!

This sad trio of kitties is lingering and lonely in the kitty room

Sometimes we get cats in that for various reasons (or no reason that we can discern) that seem to get passed over for adoption for weeks, and even more unfortunately, for months at a time. Quite often, these kitties are a little shy, a little older, or just not the prettiest flowers in the bunch.

Lack of beauty, however, is not Sassy’s case- she has been with us for a year now and is a gorgeous Siamese. Go figure! If you don’t know her, she might seem stand-offish, but she warms up very nicely with just a little attention. She would do best in a quiet home, and would make a great companion for an older adult or single person.

Scooter is another of our “long termers”, having come to the shelter last Christmas. He is a middle-aged, handsome tuxedo cat that is used to other cats, but can be a little shy and also probably would do best in a quieter home.

Lily is a very sweet middle-aged tiger stripe and white girl that lost her home last April and ended up here. Her paperwork says she does not like other cats (and yet she is in the kitty room with a number of feline companions) but likes dogs. She would do great in an adult home, and probably would be a terrific buddy for a lonely dog.

We do our best to make life as good as possible for the shelter dogs and cats, but let’s face it- there’s no place like home! These three lonely kitties have spent a lot of time hoping that their special person will come in, and maybe, just maybe, think for a change that they are pretty, or cute or sweet and take them home to new lives where they will be loved. Waiting is hard when it has gone on so long…

Buddy says: ”I must have the wrong name- no one seems to want me to be their buddy”

BuddyPet Report

Dear Readers,

You might remember me from one of these columns that was done a few weeks ago. When the people here at the shelter wrote about me, I was so excited! Between this shelter and the one I came from before, I have been in a cage for a long time, and I really thought all the nice things they said about me in the paper would find me a home.

But as the weeks go by, I have begun to think that maybe no one wants to bring me home. I have tried to keep my spirits up, and greet the shelter visitors in my friendly way, because I really like people. But, I have to admit that I have grown forlorn lately, and have taken to digging myself a “nest” in the back of my outdoor cage where I can crawl in and watch the other dogs get picked.

I know that one of the reasons no one has taken me to love is that a lot of people don’t think I’m very handsome. I know this because I have heard people who pass by my run say things like: “That’s kind of an odd looking dog- wonder what he’s mixed with?” Well, I think I am a Rottie/Ridgeback mix, or so I’ve been told.

Well, I know that I’m not the prettiest flower in the bouquet, but I also know that I am probably one of the nicest. I would be a great companion for a single person, or a family with older children. I love, dearly love, to go for walks, and I put on my best manners when I’m out.

I can tell you all that I’m not giving up hope, but I’m really getting sadder.  I want to tell everyone: “Hey, remember me? My name is Buddy and I am still here!” Surely there is someone reading this who will want to bring home a maybe not so handsome but very nice dog. I think I’m one of those books they talk about that you can’t judge by its cover…

Still hoping for a chance,

Buddy

Come and play in the Jungle Room with the mini tigers and lions!

August 6, 2012

Pet Report – By Cory McKeown

When we recently did some remodeling at the shelter and had to move the cats and
s around as the work progressed, some kind person got the great idea of putting all the kittens that were already altered and had complete shot series together in the Jungle Room. And what a wonderful place this has turned out to be!

This room is spacious, and has nice natural light and opens into the lobby through glass French doors. And the very best thing- there are no cages- the kittens are free range kittens, and boy, do they love this!kitten antics

The setting is also great for our visitors looking to adopt a kitten, as they can go in the room and play with the kittens and watch them frolic. It is particularly nice, because the kittens tend to choose their people, rather than visa versa, and families with children can see what kittens seem good with the kids.

This setting is somewhat unusual for a shelter, as most people know who have visited shelters and have seen kitten after kitten in rows of cages, and have not been able to enjoy petting them and watching their wonderful antics.

So, if you are looking for a kitten to adopt, bring the family and come enjoy the Jungle Room. And remember, our prices for cats and kittens are fantastic- we have a “two fer” going on right now with kittens, and one can adopt two new delightful companions for less than the usual adoption fee for one kitten at most shelters. Sweet kittens at very nice prices!

Shelter wish list

We would be very grateful to receive donations of Purina Kitten Chow and canned cat food- the poultry varieties seem to be easiest on the kitties’ tummies. We want to say how appreciative we are of the kindness of our loyal supporters and wonderful volunteers- we couldn’t do it without you! Thank you so much for all you do.

Buddy asks: “Can you bring me home for love and Pet Pilates?”

Just as so often happens in grade school, when the chubbier kids often are overlooked when it comes to picking players for teams, the dogs that are a little overweight at the shelter tend to linger. Even if they have great personalities, just like the chubby kids, they are passed by day after day for the more “buff” canines.
This is exactly the case with “Buddy”, a very nice young middle-aged Rottweiler/Rhodesian Ridgeback (?) combo dog that has really positive attributes but that could stand to lose a few pounds.
Buddy is very good on a leash, and loves to go for walks. He is paws down the favorite of our loyal dog-walkers, because he is so well-behaved. And, in spite of his having a few extra pounds, he is “good to go” for even longer walks. If the right person comes along who likes to walk, Buddy could easily shed his few extra pounds-chubby he is,  couch potato he is not!
He is good with the other dogs, and would likely enjoy the companionship of another compatible canine buddy. Buddy would be great with older kids- especially kids who would like to take him for a walk- his most-favorite activity in all the world.
If you are an active person, maybe someone who remembers the sadness of not getting picked first for the team, please think about Buddy- he shouldn’t have to linger in a cage because of a few extra pounds. You could give him a chance to be the first on your team, which is all he wants in life…

Chipper is definitely in the “way cool” orange cat category

When I was growing up, my dad had a charming male orange tabby cat he named “Redrick”. Dad always swore up and down that orange cats were by far the best, and his boy was definitely true to form. Redrick was extremely affectionate, and had a dog-like loyalty. Wherever my dad went and whatever he was doing around the house, Redrick was right there- “helping”. Dad had the wonderful pleasure of enjoying his orange boy for seventeen years.

When we got “Chipper” in as a stray, we could see right away that he has the great orange cat qualities. He is extremely affectionate- he simply adores people of all ages. Chipper loves to sit on laps and to be held- any attention he receives sends him into auto-purr mode.

He would be a wonderful addition to an even busier household,  as not much seems to fluster him.

Anytime he spots someone approaching his cage, he sticks his orange-striped paws through the bars as if to say “Are you coming to see me? Are you coming to take me home and love me?”

We are so hoping that Chipper’s person is out there, just waiting to meet him- it could truly be a match made in heaven.

Are you missing “Grandpa”?

This older and very thin tiger cat was brought into the shelter several weeks ago by a kind lady who just lives a block away, which made us think he must belong to someone who lost him quite close to the shelter.

We named him “Grandpa” and he is in foster care while we hope someone comes for him. He is very affectionate, and has a meow like the creak of a rusty gate hinge. He is a neutered brown tabby, with just a little white around his mouth.

If you are missing “Grandpa” please come and ask about him. He tells us he is too old to put up with a lot of new things, and he just wants to come home.

Fuzzy Wuzzy: Hairless but hopeful in Long Beach

It seems to be very fashionable these days for men who are “hair challenged” to simply shave their heads for a nice clean look- it even seems that some men who have full heads of hair are shaving their heads to “rock the look”.

Well, if this clean-shaven look is all the current  trend, little Fuzzy Wuzzy must be quite the “fashionista”! The only difference is that  she was born stylish. She is a mix of an  unusual breed named a Xoloitzcuintli, or in our country, the Mexican Hairless. Evidence shows that this breed has existed in Mexico for more than 3,000 years, and is the national dog of Mexico.

The Xolo, as this breed is nicknamed, are known to be of high intelligence, very curious, and when raised properly, can be very well-behaved and affectionate companions.

Fuzzy is a very sweet little girl, and has almost a comical look with her fuzzy topknot and tail- the rest of her  has spots of  “peach fuzz”- needless to say, petting her is a unique experience. She loves to to for walks and is in heaven when someone will take time to play with her.

She would make a wonderful companion for someone with allergies, or someone who doesn’t want to make the investment in one of the new and expensive “pet-friendly” vacuums. No globs of hair left everywhere with this girl!

Fuzzy  is one of our “long-timer” dogs and it would be wonderful for her if someone would come along and give her a chance at a real life. She needs her own kind human to hold her and keep her warm in the winter- dog sweaters are good, but warm people are even better!

Pirouettes, pounces and purrs- we have beautiful kittens for adoption!

June 24, 2012

2-for-1 Kittens! It is officially kitten season, and the pace at the shelter has picked up to a wonderful level.

Of course, when we get a larger number of babies, they take more care than the adult cats. But, with the kittens comes the pleasure of watching their antics as they romp and play their way through most of their waking hours. For animal lovers, it is much better than watching TV!

We have a great variety of kittens in all sizes, mixes and colors- orange guys, tabbies, calicoes, – all the colors and patterns of the kitty rainbow.

And, another great incentive for potential adopters looking for a new kitty companion is our “budget-friendly” adoption fees. Not only can you find an adorable kitten to brighten your life, your new family addition will come with great benefits: spayed or neutered; leukemia tested; wormed; first shots; flea treated (if needed) and best of all- at a very nice price!

We are also offering a “two-fer” price for adopters looking for a pair of kittens. Cats are a lot more social than they are often said to be, and can be wonderful “buddies” and companions for one another. In today’s hectic world when so many family members are going every which way, it’s nice to know that that you truly haven’t had to leave your pets alone when you have to be away from home- they have each other. After all, as they say, “the best cat toy is another cat”.

So, bring the family to visit the shelter and see our adorable new feline residents- better yet, come and fall in love- get smitten with a kitten!

We are running very low on some essential supplies at the shelter, and would be very grateful to receive donations. We need canned poultry variety kitty food, paper towels, and laundry detergent. Thanks so much for your loyal support.

PET REPORT

December 7, 2011

By Cory McKeown

All Smiley Sadie wants for Christmas is no more shelter sunsets

Researchers tell us that dogs don’t think the same way we do about the passing of time. While we humans can think about the past and project into the future, dogs tend to live in the “here and now”.
If this is true, then the unfortunate dogs that linger week after week, month after month in shelters must just spend each of their many days confined to a cage just noticing that over and over, the sun comes up (for dogs lucky enough to have some outside time every day, like ours) and the sun sets. They notice that after some sunrises, people come and adopt some of the more fortunate dogs around them, and leave them again to face another sunset alone.
This scenario has been played out for Sadie, time after time. If one counts the first time she was rescued from a bad situation in Eastern Oregon to the time she has been in our shelter, Sadie has been in a cage since August.
An unfortunate strike against her is that she is a black lab mix, and black cats and dogs linger notoriously in shelters. But, if you take the time to look past her coat color, you can see what a very nice girl she truly is. And, she smiles! She doesn’t just look happy and goofy like so many labs, she actually smiles! When people are wandering around the runs and most of the dogs are barking like crazy, this sweet dog is quietly circling her cage. She wags her tail non stop,  and smiles her smile,  usually with a toy in her mouth and the hope that  someone will notice her.
Sadie is a large, sturdy, and healthy young to middle aged dog.  She has a very nice energy level, and our dog walkers tell us she is excellent on a leash and a joy to walk- and boy, does she like to go for walks!
Other than her sweet personality, it is obvious that what Sadie loves more than anything is people. When someone takes the time to talk to her, she rolls over on her back, hoping for a belly rub and attention. She loves people of all sizes and ages, and would be a great dog for older kids.
Just like us people, Sadie really likes some of her own kind, but isn’t as fond of some others.  If she likes a dog, she is on her best behavior, and could make a good companion to another dog in your family. Just bring your dog by for a “meet and greet”.
She is, however, not good with cats and should go to a “cat free zone” home.
It is kind of amazing how Sadie can smile through so much time in a cage. But, dogs are like that, aren’t they? If you are looking for a very loyal and sweet canine companion, please take some time out of your busy holiday season to come and look at Sadie. She doesn’t deserve more shelter sunrises and sunsets- she deserves  a place in a loving home of her own, where she can watch the sunset with her new person. She is hoping  that person might be you…
Shelter Wish List
Usually, the holiday season is a time at the shelter where we see just how generous and kind our loyal supporters are- and the homeless animals are hoping the same will be true again this year! We are in need of dry kitty and dog food, as well as canned food.
Of course, monetary donations are also  very much needed and appreciated. Our shelter is largely volunteer-driven, and supporters who donate money can rest assured that a very large percentage of their donations go directly for the care of the animals.
Thank you from our hearts, and the critters thank you, also. Have a wonderful holiday season.
