Pacific County Master Builders President Glenn Trusty presents a check to Keith Schwartz for the South Pacific County Humane Society. Money for the donation was raised through the Pacific County Master Builders’ annual surplus sale. Each year the group votes to determine which non-profit organization will benefit from the surplus sale’s earnings. This year’s sale raised about $2,600 for the no-kill shelter.
SPCHS wants to give a BIG shout out to Glenn & Hillary Trusty, and to all the Pacific County Master Builders, for the check presented to us last week, the result of their choosing us as a beneficiary of their annual surplus sale. Thanks, Master Builders!!
Read on; the group will be holding a Home and Garden Show at the Elks next weekend (July 24-25-26, 2009). We’ll be there and hope to see you!

Pioneer Market

Gas Station and convenience store located in north Long Beach has been a favorite of Rod Runners and locals for years. Stop in and see that Pioneer is much more than your average convenience store!
My family has been in the convenience store business since 1981 when my father, Art bought Uncle Bob’s Cannery and turned it into Art’s Market. It was a wonderful business and home but in spring of 1995 my parents decided that it was falling apart and we needed to make some changes. So we demolished our business and home and a few months later in July of 1995 Pioneer Market featuring Chevron fuel was open for business. We strive to be a clean, friendly place where customers can feel welcome and appreciated.
Pioneer Market supports the shelter through paying for a membership and donating money. We also put fliers up in our community board when given to us and, whenever possible we display SPCHS events on our big reader board. One of our family members/employees has donated bags and bags of pet food. I have donated money, food, and garage sale items in previous years and also always attend the sales when I can.

Breakers pet fees fund donation to Peninsula’s no-kill shelter
Chinook Observer, 06/24/09Cutler Management, Inc., managing agent for the Breakers, a beachfront condominium resort in north Long Beach, made a donation of more than $1,000 to South Pacific County Humane Society (SPCHS) in Long Beach this week. The ceremony was marked with a check presentation and photos Monday afternoon.
After deciding at the end of last year to donate a portion of collected pet fees, the total sum of the fees for the first half of 2009 have been rounded up by Cutler Management to present to the no-kill shelter. Fees are collected by most pet-friendly lodging establishments, ranging from $10 to $50 per night on average.
“Pet fees here on the Peninsula are typically lower than we find elsewhere in the state,” noted Una Boyle, executive director of the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau. “We are a very pet-friendly community, with many merchants welcoming dogs in their stores and providing biscuits and water for their canine customers. Having a no-kill shelter is something this community should be very proud of and the Breakers sets a great example by donating their pet fees.”
Said Mike Litawa, president of Cutler Management and second vice president of the shelter: “It is great to be able to welcome dogs onto our lawns, dunes and beach and at the same time generate money that goes towards helping homeless pets in our local community.”
From data entry to event planning, management and execution, board service, paperwork, fundraising and more, Cutler Management offers up hundreds of staff hours each year to the cause of finding forever homes for lost and surrendered pets in need of a new family. Cutler Management Business Manager Michelle Zinkevics is new to the SPCHS Board of Directors this year, “I’ve been involved with shelters in other communities and I am really impressed with the way this community supports its Humane Society. It costs a lot to keep the doors open and, month after month, from coins dropped in donation jars to writing checks, to supporting events and fundraisers, this community pays the bills.”
“Every dollar makes a difference” is written across the bottom of the hand-written thank-you notes board members Keleigh Schwartz and Harriet Cavalli send out weekly. Based on the many avenues this organization works to receive funds, it would seem to be true. Bequests and planned giving are boosts to the bottom line and the organization holds a number of events throughout the year, as well as an annual raffle, to raise the nearly $11,000 per month it costs to operate frugally. Donors sponsor pets for adoption and many of these are ‘paid forward’ with the pet’s adopter paying the fee for another pet before taking their new family member home. Memorial plaques hang on the wall of the shelter’s lobby, another fundraiser. Donations of hand-crafted goods are often at the front counter for sale and donation jars can be found throughout the community.
In addition to cash donations, a wish list can be found on www.beachpets.com, the shelter’s Web site. Board President Keleigh Schwartz is quick with an answer, when asked what is needed at the moment. “Kitty litter and pet food, especially kitten and puppy food and milk. We were so fortunate last year that 100 percent of our pet food was donated. One bag, one dollar at a time, SPCHS donors, staff and volunteers get the job done.”

Ocean Front Cabins were established in the early 20′s. When they first opened there were both cottages and tent houses available and the road to get to Oceanside was nothing but dirt and wood planks. In 1943 there were 40 cabins and they were called Kirk’s Motel. Through the years there have been many changes to Oceanside. The cabins have had changes made as well. One difference is that there are now only seven cabins. There numbers are 17-23. A remnant of days gone by. When looking at the surrounding hillside you can still pick out homes that were formerly part of Kirk’s.
In 1989, John and Patricia De Ruyter purchased the cottages. They were given a new name and the innkeeper’s residence was turned into a coffee house. Over the past several years, the cabins have been getting spruced up and, although the cabins have been renovated, they still hold the charm that comes with having stood the elements for over 80 years.
In fact all of Oceanside is like a step back in time. There are no shops or large commercial buildings, just a restaurant, tavern, post office a few motels and bed and breakfasts and a coffeehouse. What Oceanside is lacking in modern facilities it more than compensates in lack of crowds, beautiful beaches and stunning scenery.
Oceanside is truly a hidden gem. John and Patricia would love to have you come and stay with them while you discover its secrets and the incredible value of this quiet getaway.
