Here’s how:

CHRISTMAS MORNING. We’re accepting donations of canned chicken and salt-free tuna, white unflavored rice, blankets, and toys between Thanksgiving and December 22nd. Our goal is to give each animal in our care, on Christmas morning, a blanket to snuggle, a new toy and a special meal to warm their bellies. You can make Christmas morning special for our Shelter residents by dropping your donation at SPCHS at 330 Second Ave NE in Long Beach between the hours of 11am and 4pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays. |

GIFT DONATIONS. Make a donation in someone’s name and we’ll send them a card notifying them of your gift. If you prefer, we’ll put the card in a gift box so you can deliver it in person. Want to see the cards from which you can choose? Available through December 22nd; special arrangements can be made for later delivery but MUST be made ahead of time. |

HOLIDAY CARDS. New this year! Make a donation between now and December 21st (or when we run out of cards, whichever comes first) and we’ll send you a boxed set of our Christmas cards to send to your friends and family. A box of 12 cards for a $20 donation; a box of 20 cards for a $25 donation. The cards came out beautifully and are getting rave reviews for quality and design. Take a look! SPCHS Receives $1200 Thundershirt Grant
September 28, 2012

Thundershirt’s mission is to bring relief to the millions of dogs and dog owners struggling to cope with dog anxieties. The Thundershirt is designed to provide a constant, gentle pressure to a dog’s torso creating a dramatic calming effect for most dogs. Thundershirt continues to investigate dog anxiety and fear issues with scientific-based studies and surveys from recognized veterinarians and customers. In its first two years, Thundershirt has helped tens of thousands of dogs across the country and around the world.
The Petfinder.com Foundation partnered with the Thundershirt company to award Thundershirt grants. The goal of the grant program is to reduce the stress and anxiety in shelter dogs, in turn making them more adoptable and better able to find their forever home. The grant is made possible by our partnership with the Thundershirt company. The Thundershirt alleviates stress symptoms in over 80% of the dogs who use it. When used at a shelter, the Thundershirt can help dogs relax, reduce the behavioral issues associated with stress and make the dog more adoptable. The Thundershirt then follows the dog to her new home, providing her with a soothing pressure that should help to reduce her anxiety and improve the adoption experience for both dog and owner. The Thundershirt is also great for:
- Fear of thunder/fireworks
- Separation anxiety
- Travel anxiety
- Crate training
- Problem barking
- Hyperactivity
- Leash pulling
- And more!
Thanks to Executive Director Jeannette Sterling applying for the grant, SPCHS received a box of $1200 worth of Thundershirts recently–in every size imaginable. We’ve used them on dogs large and small with remarkable results. Since these aids go home with a dog when it is adopted, our supply will need replacing. If you purchase a Thundershirt here: http://www.petfinder.com/promotions/thundershirt, 15% of your purchase will go directly to the Petfinder.com Foundation, and you can have it shipped directly to us. The dogs will soooo appreciate your donation!

Dennis Company ROCKS!
June 23, 2012
Dennis Company has long been a supporter of SPCHS, hosting our Pet Photos with Santa working with their vendors to provide skids of quality pet food at no cost, selling us skids of kitty litter at their cost, providing free delivery of all kinds of things, including receiving and temporarily storing donations of food from manufacturers. They always step up to the plate when we ask for a donation for a fundraiser, and some of those donations have been pretty hefty! Check out the fireplace they donated to this year’s BIG RAFFLE.
We can’t thank you enough, Dennis Company!
Supporters, please help us show our gratitude by shopping the outstanding pet department at the Dennis Company store here in Long Beach. Heck, shop in all of their stores! Watch their facebook page, www.facebook.com/denniscompany for announcements of specials, web-only coupons and the like. There’s a lot going on!
The Breakers & Cutler Management TOP NOTCH Sponsors & Volunteers!
June 15, 2012
Sunny Jim, Director of Biscuit Patrol
The Breakers is a family friendly condo hotel with independently-owned condos available for your visit to the Long Beach Peninsula. They provide an excellent atmosphere with an indoor pool, outdoor and indoor Jacuzzis, a playground, sand volleyball court, and a sports court; fully equipped kitchens, ocean view from upper floors. All of this is conveniently located at the north end of the 8.2-mile Discovery trail that leads you down the beach to Beard’s Hollow, then over Cape Disappointment and down into the marina in the working fishing village of Ilwaco.
Cutler Management, stewards of The Breakers, is committed and passionate about supporting our local NO-KILL shelter. They sponsor–and donate goods to–many of our events. Staff puts in many, many volunteer hours at our events, including sitting sales booths for the BIG RAFFLE, chairing our Memorial Day Weekend GRRRRAGE SALE and sponsoring the hole-in-one at our annual FORE! The FURRBALLS GOLF TOURNAMENT each spring. They’ve done landscaping, moved furniture, sat on the Board, provided expertise, completed hours and hours of data entry, and so much more. Check out the electric bicycles they donated to this year’s BIG RAFFLE, continuing a tradition of donating a fabulous prize to our key fundraiser. We can always count on Cutler Management and the Breakers to show up when we need a hand.
If you are going to be visiting the Long Beach Peninsula to adopt a pet from SPCHS or, if you have family or friends coming to visit with pets, consider staying at tThe Breakers in one of their pet-friendly condos. It’s a great place!

All you need is a loving home and a big heart. Be sure to ask about the “Black Lab Special” for even more fun!
