The only thing poor Charley has been hearing is “sorry, Charlie”

Charley has been a “guest” at the Humane Society now since September. Day after day, week after week, month after month, he has watched as the other dogs around him have found homes, and it is wearing on him. To look at him, one is reminded of the old prison movies where the actors are seen “going stir-crazy in the big house”.

This young lab mix has had his basic needs met at the shelter, of course, but what we most want to give him we haven’t been able to- a loving home of his own. Charley is bright and very eager to please. He knows some basic commands such as “sit” and “shake”, and it is easy to see he so enjoys one-on-one attention. Grab a leash and Charley is your primo walking companion- he delights in all things outdoors!

Charley has decided that he has had enough of the other male dogs at the shelter, but might be a great ‘big brother” companion for a nice lady dog. He certainly would a wonderful true-blue friend to his new adoptive person or family- he just needs a chance. Please come by and meet Charley, and think about giving him the chance to have a better path in his young life.

We still have beautiful kittens, kittens, kittens!

This charming and handsome trio of Siamese mix brothers are just a few of the wonderful kittens we have for adoption at the shelter. Usually by this time of the year, “kitten season” is winding down, and often people who come to the shelter over the holidays hoping to find a kitten to adopt only to go away disappointed.

Not this year! We still have kittens of all ages, colors, and patterns, just waiting to play their way into loving new homes. Come see our feisty felines today- we are offering special reduced adoption rates, especially to adopters wanting more than one cat or kitten- remember, two is not twice the work, only twice the fun!

Shelter wish list

Because of the late kitten season and the number of babies at the shelter, we are running very low on Purina Kitten Chow- the kind in the yellow bag. We try to feed the little guys a consistent diet so their tummies don’t get upset. We would be very grateful to receive donations of Kitten Chow, and thank you so much for your support of the shelter and for caring about the animals at a time when the economy is tough.

Hello to everyone at the Long Beach Humane Society,

I wanted to drop this note to tell you how Simon, now Max, is doing.  He has fit into our home beautifully.  He was housebroken within 24 hours and is learning very fast.  He is still afraid of a lot of things but is coming along incredibly well.  I wish I had my camera the day we went to the beach on our first horseback ride.  You would think he had been on the trail with a horse from day one.

We are working steadily at socializing him, both with dogs and people.  So far he is doing extremely well.  Some fear, but no aggression.  He is so smart, leash training took all of one afternoon for him to not pull.

I cannot thank all of you enough for the work you put into him while he was in your care.  I wish I lived closer to you.  If anyone wants to visit Max, all are welcome any time.  I hope Oliver did as well.

He and the other dogs play non-stop.

Take care,

Tara

Some pics of our fast growing boy.  He’s getting used to his four Cat siblings and only had to be rolled twice by our big cat to find out where his standing is in the pack.

I had the good fortune of sitting with this litter for about an hour the other day.  One would wake up and climb all over her siblings for a while, then find a new spot to sleep.  Then another would wake and the game would begin again.  It was like watching a kitty version of leap frog in slow motion.

Cats really are like potato chips.  How can you have just one?

SPCHS got a very nice shout out from Stephanie Freize in her blog this week.  Check it out.  Nice!  :-D

Stephanie also mentioned that Patti Page did a recording for the Humane Society of the United States.   The cut is part of HSUS’s “SHELTERS ROCK” program, which celebrates National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week.  Page’s “Look at that Doggie in the Shelter”, a re-make of the 1952 “How much is that Doggie in the Window?”, will be available in late-November at www.humanesociety.org/pattipage.

You can watch the original black and white cut of Patti Page in the classic Hitchcock film, The Man Who Knew Too Much, here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHAA3IK0SY4.  When I watch, our Great Dane, Perdita, sings along.  :-)

Now you have!  Doesn’t this lovely lady have a lion’s face?  She’s quite the lounger; is your lap available?

This is our jungle kitty room.  Our volunteers converted an office space to make a special place for some of our cats waiting adoption.  Didn’t they do a great job with attention to details?  The cats love the variety of textures.

How fun is this?  Our volunteers did a great job creating this new kitty space.  From the fake grass floor to the solar lights behind the picket fence, it really feels like a little park in here.  Stop by and take a tour!

We have quite the crop of late-fall kittens.  These guys are kind of small for their six weeks of age.  Mom nursed them most of the way but then needed surgery so our foster families did a little bottle feeding and now they’re ready to find their forever homes.  Come, meet them!
