Libby Update

Libby is a dog that was chosen, from SPCHS, for the Prison Dogs program. She was exercised, trained, and socialized in the program and now is enjoying her new home! Here’s an update from her forever family:
Libby loves a good belly rub! This week she got a check up at our vet’s office and she got her microchip, which was a relief to get accomplished. Libby has been so good with our cats. They are learning that she really isn’t as threatening as she looks. Often she will just curiously watch them walk by without moving. She’s very polite.
Libby meeting new friends on her first trip to our local dog park.
It was crowded in the main off leash play area so we kept her on leash in the quieter part of the park for her first trip.
Look at that perfect heel!
This was Father’s Day. We found this funny t-shirt on-line. It seemed perfect since Libby is so well known and loved at SCCC!
Our daughter was going on a trip for four days. She was saying good-bye to Libby.
This was the happy reunion when our son returned from a long weekend away from home. Whenever he picks Libby up she looks perplexed. “Why am I suddenly five feet taller?” She is such a sweetheart and she has brought a lot of warmth and happiness to our home. We often laugh about how Libby is such a graceful and gentle lady, but she snores like a grown man! : )
Adoption Update

Just a brief note to tell you how well June (now Calypso Caliente) and Noki
(now Tolliver) are doing. I adopted them on St. Patrick’s Day weekend this
year. Last year, Memorial Day weekend, I adopted the shelter’s Siamese mix
kitten, Squirt (now Finn.) (I also had a hoot that weekend at the shelter’s
and many other folks’ garage sales. I’ve told a lot of people about the fun
of seeing neat stuff at almost every home in every block in Long Beach.)
The great thing about my little cat colony is how sweet they all are
together. Each is a definite personality, but the mix works well. They
cuddle and groom each other in different pairs. Calli, the only
featherweight in the crew (and my only female), trills a lot in conversation
with us all. She particularly adores our dog. When she cuddles up with him,
she’s pretty much enveloped, but he’s gentle and she acts like it’s pure
bliss. When she’s especially happy (mealtime), she stands on her hind legs
so that she can nuzzle his face- she then strolls back and forth rubbing his
chest before she stands up to rub his muzzle again. She is an amazing, happy
little bundle.
Tolly loves being held and also likes having his long fur brushed.
He’s usually the first to sprawl on me when I put my feet up to read or
watch TV. His own feet are still way bigger than the rest of him so I’m sure
he’ll be pretty big as an adult. He’s not keen on having his nails trimmed,
but we’re working on that with treats.
Thanks again for the loan of the travel crate- I’ll return it before too
much time passes. And thanks for having such sweet, easy going kittens for
me to bring home. Hats off to you all!
Regards,
D.

Update on Henery

I just wanted to share another pic of Henry with Moses that I took recently when we went hiking. It was a lot of fun, Henry would freeze and point whenever he saw a waterfall thru the trees. But he disliked the creek crossings. You’ll note that Henry, being the youngest of all of us, is wearing the backpack. –Sarah

PET REPORT SOS- please help- 33+ adorable kittens need loving homes!!!

After a fairly quiet spring, kitten season has hit with a bang, and we have now over 30 kittens that need homes. We have little guys of every description: tigers; orange sherbets; black beauties; white with pretty patches, and some with shorter than normal tails.
What matters even more than what the kittens look like, is their sweet personalities and their longing for human companionship and for homes of their own. We try hard to make the shelter a good place for them as they bide their time, with scratching posts, condos and toys, but let’s face it, a cage is a cage…
Summer is a great time to adopt a kitten (or even better, two kittens!!!). When the kids are out of school and the family has more spare time, it can be time well spent to bring home a new furry companion and get them oriented to their new lives. Also, it is a wonderful opportunity to introduce the kids to the satisfaction and sense of responsibility that caring for a pet can bring.
While we have very reasonable prices for cats and kittens, we know that adoption fees are important to the stability of the shelter. But we also know how vital it is that our critters don’t linger in our no kill shelter, and soon have loving people to hold them and make their lives complete. Please come in and see our kittens and give them a chance.
Shelter Wish List
After you have read about our many kittens, it probably will come as no surprise that our wish list is also about kittens and what they need. We would be very grateful to receive donations of Purina Kitten Chow, and canned cat food. The kittens seem to do well on the kitten chow, and the canned food is a wonderful treat for these little guys while they are in cages, or are under the weather and have less than normal appetites.
Also, we want to remind low-income South Pacific County residents that we still have “Fix Your Cat Free” vouchers available to get their cats altered and help prevent even more kittens- kittens that might be unwanted and as a result, are destined to live short, hard lives. Come in and get a voucher today- free is a very good price and can help save lives!!!

The dogs are not posing very well, but Zip does tolerate Baily. I can’t find the pictures but Maggie, our Golden Retriever they do play together which is quite the sight. Maggie is so big but the puppies just love her. Baily and daughter’s pup, Boggers and the others are the right size but are not real players. Baily loves to get away to chase her but she just shoos her away and comes back to me. Then it starts all over again until nap time when they all cuddle together for a snooze. Thanks again for Zip and Baily. They have both added to our lives.

Playful Gena is on “spin cycle”

This pretty 3-year old lab mix gets so excited when she thinks someone is going to pay attention to her that she literally turns herself in circles with exuberance. Around and around she goes, and if the person nearing her kennel stops and takes the time to greet her, she quickly goes into “sit mode”, staring at the person with her soft brown eyes and hoping, just maybe, it is her time to get petted and taken for a walk!
Gena came to us from a neighboring shelter in hopes of finding her forever home and her new best friend. She truly adores the company of people, and should make a very good family dog, as is typical of labs. She is housetrained and knows some basic manners.
Until her special someone comes for her, Gena will just have to keep turning in her circles and hoping for the attention and loving home she so craves.
Naselle folks: RU missing 3 beagles?

Several weeks ago, a kind woman brought us three beagles she had found “in the middle of nowhere” outside of Naselle. The dogs, 2 unaltered males and a female, had apparently been chasing porcupines and lost that game…
The lady was nice enough to take them to the vets, her expense, to get the quills removed from the hounds before bringing them to us for safekeeping.
So far, we have had no calls or inquiries about them, but we can tell by their good overall condition that they had been cared for by someone before their misadventure in the woods. If you are missing these guys or know of someone who might be looking for their lost dogs, please call the shelter during normal business hours.
Soon, the dogs will be altered and put up for adoption if the owner doesn’t claim them.
