Ginger is HOME.

Ginger is so adorable and fun! She runs right past the two dogs and has tried to make my Sheltie mix her surrogate mommy!

Marley says: “if you enjoyed my movie, you will love me in person”!

Obviously, this handsome golden retriever mix isn’t the real Marley of movie fame- he just looks a lot like him, and has the same fun-loving exuberance of youth the beloved movie character had as he romped through life.
This Marley was rescued from a hoarding situation in Eastern Oregon. We know his mom is a golden retriever, but have no definite information on daddy- we just have to assume he was a traveling sales dog…
Like the movie character, Marley has lots of energy, and still needs to learn more doggie manners. But he has a very sweet disposition, and is very bright and eager to please.
He gets so thrilled and excited when he sees people that we know he would make a great family dog.  Marley just needs to meet the right person to help him channel his energy towards learning. If you think you might be just that person. Come meet Marley today- he gives great “doggie kisses”!

Don’t forget to “Fix Your Cat for Free”
We want to remind low-income residents of South Pacific County that we still have vouchers available to spay or neuter their cats- absolutely free!
The Society budgets annually for this program, and it is a great opportunity for low-income folks in our community to help prevent unwanted litters of kittens. Just stop by the shelter during business hours and pick up a voucher.
Cats breed mainly in the spring through he early fall months, so the time is right to “Fix Your Cat for Free”.

Shelter Wish List

We are running very low on dried food for both the dogs and the kitties, and would be very grateful to receive donations of these items. We have found that Kirkland/Pedigree/Purina brands seem to agree the most with the canine and feline residents of the shelter.
Thanks for your help and support of our homeless critters!

Monte would even trade his favorite tennis ball for a loving home

This young dog is the kind we affectionately call a “goof ball”. These sweet dogs are usually lab mixes and have an easy-going approach to life. They adore the company of people big and small, and love to play- most often with tennis balls, which are paws-down one of their favorite things in life.

“Monte” is a poster boy for goof ball dogs. We received this young blond lab mix from a California shelter that had a high euthanasia rate. His days were numbered at that shelter, and we were very happy to be able to give him another chance. And he was very happy to be at our shelter, where he not only has a tennis ball, but volunteers take him for walks and play with him.

And play he does… Monte gets so excited when there is a playful person willing to throw his beloved ball; pet him, and tell him what a great guy he is. When he is done playing, Monte goes into his affection mode. He will sit quietly when visitors approach his run, and give gentle, soft kisses when anyone reaches through to pet him.

Monte has a very even, happy temperament and should make a very good family dog but is not good with cats and needs to go to a “feline free” home. He has spent enough of his young life behind bars, and is more than ready to find his own loving home. Hopefully a home with someone who has tennis balls and also loves to play…

It’s time to get smitten with kittens!

Kitten season is finally coming around the corner, and we have some darling kittens for adoption. As the summer wears on, we will get more kittens (we know that more owners are now spaying their cats, but unfortunately, there are still mom cats out there having babies) but we already have some real beauties.

“Tommy’s” little family was born under the house belonging to one of our volunteers. The volunteer had been feeding Mama Tommy as a stray for several months, and she decided under his house was the best place to have her kittens. He eventually got the family out and safe, and brought the beautiful kittens to the shelter. They are very healthy and sturdy, and have great patterns and markings. Mama will be spayed, and will soon have a real home with the caring volunteer.

Melanie, also one of our volunteers, has a beautiful family of kittens and a gorgeous calico mama she rescued from Eastern Oregon. The poor mama had litter after litter of kittens, even though she is barely out of kitten hood herself.

All the kittens are girls, and several are lovely bright calico like their mama. There is even a beautiful fluffy orange girl- quite unusual, as the vast majority of orange cats are males.

This family is still at Melanie’s house, and will soon be ready for adoption. If you are interested in one of these little beauties, give Mel a call at 642-2114.

Cassie Update

May 13, 2010 by

I just wanted to let you guys know that Cassie is doing great!  She has
adapted to the house well, loves to play at the creek and behaves
beautifully with the horses.  She has really come out of her shell, and
considers me her “person”.  She is actually a bit anxious anytime I leave
her, and is very protective.  When Jake (my husband) came home she actually
tried to bite him when he tried to sit next to us on the couch!  They get
along very well now and when we play around she also protects him :)   I
think that she was previously abused by a male, based on her behavior, but
she will be just fine here.  She does chase the cats, but if I tell her to
stop she does.  We will keep working on that :)
I will send you pictures as soon as I get some of her.  She rarely leaves my
side, and when she does she is so busy playing it is hard to snap a quick
shot!  I was able to get one, which I attached.  She kept laying all over my
laptop while I was working :)
Thanks again for waiting for me, I really appreciate it.  We love her very
much and are glad that she is a part of our lives.

Brindi Update

May 13, 2010 by

I just wanted to thank you all again for going out of your way yesterday to match us with a puppy. We are calling her Brindi, although the boys have been discussing other names.

Our car ride home was pretty uneventful. We made one potty stop and she slept most of the way home.
Brindi had a very busy first day and met a lot of people at the baseball park last night. She definately took to her new surroundigs quickly and is not a timid girl at all!
Not sure about her collar, yet. It’s awfully annoying and the tags make a clanking sound when she eats. ;-)
She did well sleeping in her crate. She slept for 5 hours last night!

I know there is some uncertainty regarding exactly what breed(s) she is. Do you happen to know what her mother was?

We’ll send pictures as soon as I can get her to stay still enough for a clear photo.

Thank you again!

Pioneer of Natural Pet Food Movement Under Attack

Let’s say you were trying to find a way to wean the kids off sweets to stop the cavities and dentist bills. So you spent a lot of time researching and experimenting and came up with a sugarless cookie that if sprinkled with a little herb you discovered, stopped the cavities.

You decided to set up a little bakery and sell the cookies so other parents could benefit. You made your discovery no secret, in fact you wrote articles and books describing how you did it.

Years passed and you noted that other bakeries were copying you. Nevertheless, you knew that kids were benefiting so you didn’t fret about that too much, even when they tried to convince their customers that they were the inventors. Besides, you didn’t have the resources to go through the patent process, so really everyone had a right to it.

Then one day you received a letter from an attorney on staff at a mega-billion dollar corporate conglomerate cookie bakery. He said he had a patent on your cookie. What? You do a little investigation and discover that their patent came fifteen years after you made the discovery and were selling cookies all over the country.

So you write back and tell him this. He responds and says that if you do not pay him a commission on your last six years of cookie sales, and a commission on all your sales into the future, he will sue you in federal court. You again remind him that he can’t do that because you were first. He can’t steal your idea, patent it, then demand a ransom using the threat of suit.

He says, oh yes he can, and that you better settle up or face two to three million dollars in legal fees for patent litigation. After all, he says, what you are being asked to pay him is not as much as the legal fees will be, so why not just pay him and be done with it.

The other companies that had copied you actually were infringing on the patent since they began baking the cookies after the date of the patent. Thus they had no defense other than to rely on you to prove the patent invalid. But that would mean you could incur huge legal costs and really not gain anything other than to continue what you had always been doing. The only real winners would be the companies who had copied you, since without you they would either have to stop selling the cookies or pay the six-year penalty and commissions to the patent holder.

If you capitulate and pay, you get branded as a patent infringer. You will also have to increase the price of your cookies, as will all the other companies, to cover the commissions. That means that all the parents buying the cookies will now have to pay an inflated price. It will also stick in your craw that although the mega cookie manufacturer suing you describes in detail in their patent how kids’ cavities can be prevented, they don’t even use your invention in their own cookies! They just want to make money off other companies doing it.

What would you do?

Believe it or not, this is the exact dilemma Wysong [Ed. Note: Dr. Wysong is a hero in the Natural Pet Food revolution] now faces.

Riley (aka) Rocket Update

Dear friends,

Hopefully you remember me…my name is Riley but you knew me as Rocket.  My mommy adopted me a few weeks ago, and I wanted to thank you for taking care of me until my mommy and I could find each other.  I am very happy in my new home.  I am getting better at being potty trained, but I do have a hard time when my mommy has to go to work.

I even get to go to school.  Mommy says I am the smartest one in the class.  And one day a week I get to go to a special puppy indoor dog park just for puppies like me.  I have so much fun playing and it really tires me out.

And I even have a best friend.  My mommys friend has a dog named Chance who looks just like me but bigger.  We get together and spend hours playing and wrestling with each other.

I have attached photos of me by myself and with my best friend Chance so you can see how much I have grown already.  Thank you for rescuing me so I could come to a good home and have a mommy again.

Love,
Riley Lynch

Little “broken leg” Bradley is left behind

We had a wonderful adoption response to the “magnificent mutts” we received two weeks ago from an over- crowded, high-kill rate California shelter. Big and small, these rescued dogs finally found the homes they so deserved. All but Bradley…
This sweet little Chihuahua mix is just as affectionate, cute, and eager to please as the other Chihuahua mixes we received. The only difference is that sometime in this poor young dog’s life, his front leg was broken and never fixed.
Eventually, the fracture healed, but without the benefit of veterinary care, it fused crookedly. One can only imagine how painful this process was. Now, his leg is crooked, but he seems to be making do quite well, and walking on all four limbs.
As his stay at our shelter went on, it was sad to hear people stop by his kennel to say “hi” to him only to hear them say things like “the poor thing has a crooked leg” and walk on by. Leaving him to look forlornly at them, and wonder just what was so wrong that they were no longer interested in him.
Bradley will never be a “jogging partner” dog, but gets along just fine for short walks and to get around to live his life. His leg might be crooked thanks to the neglect of a previous owner, but he holds no grudges. He just wants someone to step up and be willing to love him-crooked leg and all…

Exotic Scottish fold kittens

In 1961, a farmer in Scotland noticed that a white kitten born to one of his barn cars had an unusual fold in the middle of her ears, causing the ears to fold forward and giving the kitten a pixie-like appearance.
Over time, from this kitten named “Susie”, the farmer bred more of these kittens with the ear folds, and the Scottish fold breed was born.
Recently, we received a charming calico Scottish fold mix mama and her litter of kittens; some with folded ears and some with upright ears, as is common in a fold litter.
Several of the unique kittens have already found homes, but mama and two of her kittens are still available for adoption.
Scottish folds are said to be typically good-natured, and adjust well to other pets in the household. They are very affectionate by nature, and delight their owners with their playfulness and sweet personalities.
True to the breed, Mama Hailey and her kittens seem very calm and outgoing- perfect choice for the person wanting an affectionate, laid-back kitty companion.

Charming young “Cracker”- wirehaired pointing griffon mix, or…?

When we received this young dog last week as a transfer from an overcrowded California shelter where a lot of dogs are often apparently on the “short list” we saw that he was an extremely friendly and playful guy. But what we weren’t sure of, as often happens with the mixed breed dogs we get, just what mix he was…
Obviously, the staff at the other shelter also appreciated his good nature, as one of the staffers wrote on his paperwork:  “This dog is a crack-up”. So, this helped us name him”Cracker”. The other shelter didn’t venture to guess his heritage, so we were driven to look in our dog breed ID book to try to figure him out.
As close as we can tell, young Cracker is quite possibly a wirehaired pointing griffon mix. The griffon was developed in the Netherlands as a hardy hunting dog, and worked with their owners in marshy, low-lying terrain, hunting birds.
While the griffons apparently make good hunting dogs, what interested us more is the fact that they are also known to be extremely people oriented, with an ease of trainability and high degree of cooperation.
In other words, they can also make very good and loving pets, and are gentle with children. They are also known to have a lot of vitality and endurance, and can make great agility dogs.
Cracker has been in a cage for quite a while, given his time at the other shelter, and has energy built up from confinement and boredom. When folks stop by his kennel to say “hi” it is obvious he loves people, as he dances so with excitement he seems to almost turn himself inside out with his wiggling and prancing.
Come by and meet this charming mutt- he would love to bring his brand of youthfulness and loyal affection into your heart and home!

Princess Jazmen Update

May 5, 2010 by

Things are going great with my little Chi I got. I named her Princess Jazmen and she already comes when I call her. She has only went poo in the house once, and that was my fault as I didn’t understand that she needed to go.
She is such a little love. When we went to bed, right as I pulled back the covers she scurried under them and got settle for the night.
She is having a bit of a hard time with the colder weather here, shivering at times, so I just left little blankets down so she can cover up when she gets cold. She likes her blankie that I gave her.
I got her a pink colar and a bandanna and she doesn’t mind wither of them.
She was really good when I stopped at my daughters to show her to the kids, all she did was lick them…hehehe
I clipped her nails and she did great, didn’t even mind.

Thank you so much for my new baby, she is quite the little love.
Let me know how it goes getting rid of the rest of them. I am telling people about the shelter and posted something on my Facebook about adopting one if they have a good home and the room.
