The ghosts of 2nd Street Northeast
The pets we get into the shelter that are just so darned cute, so outgoing that they more or less sell themselves, we call “no brainers”. In other words, we generally don’t have to spend much time thinking about how to get them the loving homes they so deserve- potential adopters tend to fall for them very quickly.
You won’t often see these very adoptable pets featured in our column- it is the more shy or less attractive pets that need our help. We don’t like to think of them as “special needs” pets. We would rather think of them as critters that may be a little less fortunate and just in need of “special people”. People who will step up and give them a chance.
Often, these pets are our more shy kitties. Guys like “Ghost” and “Andy” that are afraid of all the hub-bub of shelter life, and tend to spend their days hiding. It is tough to notice a kitty that is hiding, and they tend to linger at the shelter. “Ghost kitties” if you will.
But, people who spend the time to meet these kitties and talk softly and pet them often will notice something very gratifying.  These “ghost kitties” will come out of hiding and stretch and purr- loving the fact that someone is willing to meet them in their own frightened territory.
The “special people” who are willing to go the extra mile and actually adopt one of these shyer kitties and work with them are often rewarded with a very loyal and loving companion.  We are hoping there is someone who is willing to come and meet Ghost and Andy and perhaps give them a new life.
A little love goes a long way when your days at the shelter are passing endlessly as other pets find homes.
Shelter wish list

Kitten season is off and ROARING and we are running desperately low on Purina Kitten Chow- the kind in the yellow bag. Kittens are “high octane” babies, and eat a lot for their small size. We like the Purina Kitten Chow for them because they seem to be able to chew it and digest it well, and it can be wetted down for the tiny kittens just being weaned. Our little felines would be very grateful to receive some “Chow” and want to say “thank you” for caring about them!

Oh, puppies! What a party you had!!!

Saturday we threw a party for our shelter puppies, and what a great event it turned out to be! People flocked to the shelter to see the puppies, and to enjoy the free hot dogs, prizes, games and other goodies.

Not only was it a very fun event for everyone, but 12 puppies and dogs, plus several kittens found loving homes! Even the sweet “Mama Dog” that was the doting mom to her litter of 7 pups got a home.  A win-win situation if ever there was one!

We want to thank everyone who donated goodies for the event, and to tell our volunteers and members how much we appreciate all the hard work they put into making the party such a success.

A special “thanks” goes out to Shelter Manager Diana Galbreath, who put a tremendous amount of time and effort into organizing this happening. Diana, you are not only great with the shelter pets, you throw one heck of a party- many thanks!

Labrador Update!

I’m not sure if you remember my yellow lab “Chance” I adopted from you in February but in case you do I’m just writing to let you know he’s still doing great! He’s finally able to run around outside without being tied up and stays home, comes when he’s called and now about 105lbs. He has quite the personality and everyone that meets him loves him. He was spooked over the 4th with the fireworks and does not like thunder and lightning so it’s good those events don’t happen too often. He rode all the way to Alaska and back with me in May/June… I think he was glad to have the road trip over but jumped up in the truck to go everyday. He was a real trooper and got to see lots of wildlife up close.

Thanks again,

Linda, Centralia, WA

And, from our friends at the Banfield Pet Hospital in Portland:

Having a blast already at the Banfiled Head Quarters Private Dog Park. Thank you so much! They are so loved already!!!!!
