Please don’t let Murphy and Tommy spend another season looking for loving homes

Both of these nice young neutered male kitties have been with us far too long. Tommy, an orange tabby with a charming moustache, arrived in February, a stray needing refuge from the storms of winter. Murphy, and engaging black and white guy, came to us in March from a crowded shelter where his days were undoubtedly numbered.
Sadly, as sometimes happens, these boys have been passed over now for months. They have watched for weeks as other cats and kittens have come and gone, spending endless hours looking hopefully out the kitty room windows, waiting for a chance to belong to a special someone.
They haven’t given up hope, but are getting sad and restless as they see the days of summer marching by. More days spent without someone who cared enough to give them new lives. Looking for far too long from the inside out…
Come and meet our wonderful new dogs!
Over the weekend, we received some very people-pleasing new dogs. We got in several nice lab mixes, and a cute and trim dappled Doxie appropriately named “Dapper”. All with tails wagging and waiting eagerly to meet you!!!
Seaman’s Day at Fort Clatsop

Over two hundred years ago, the 33 people of the Lewis and Clark Expedition wintered at Fort Clatsop. The 34th “member” of this expedition was not a human. The 16th annual Seaman’s Day commemorating the dog of the Corps of Discovery will be held Wednesday, July 8 at Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop.
This event offers visitors an opportunity to learn about Meriwether Lewis’ Newfoundland dog, Seaman, and to meet some modern Newfoundland dogs. According to the explorers’ journals, Seaman served as a watchdog, hunter, retriever, companion and diplomat during the two-and-a-half year voyage of discovery.
At 11:30 and 3:30, next to the fort replica, rangers will share a talk called Our Dog Seaman. Programs about modern life with a huge, furry Newfoundland dog are scheduled for 12:30 and 2:30. Costumed human rangers will also be at the fort during the day to answer questions, share history, and present flintlock programs at 10:30, 1:30, and 4:30.
The park is open daily from 9:00 to 6:00. The parking lots at the visitor center and at Netul Landing are all open this summer. Admission is $3 per adult and free for youth 15 and under. Passes to National Park Service sites are accepted.
For more information, call the park at (503) 861-2471.

Starting June 28th, and continuing until July 5, it is legal to shoot off fireworks from 9 am to 11 pm daily, except for the 4th, when, as the officer said “we don’t enforce any times on the 4th at all”.
Please keep closer tabs on your critters during this time and talk to your veterinarian if your pet needs some chemical help enduring the week of explosions.

Congratulations to the Long Beach Merchants and City of Long Beach for another outstanding Doggie Olympic Games!
The Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau maintains a page on the day of fun which describes the events. It’s a good page to bookmark as that’s the first place you’ll find 2010 information.
The first of the photos are in! Linda Baehr does a great job of capturing the stars of the show, the dogs that enter. Here is an overview slideshow, with about 175 photos: http://www.funbeach.com/slideshows.html
Want more? Linda gave us 277 photos to share with you!
http://beachpets.com/photos/DOG09/ss/ If you’d like to print photos, all you need to do is follow the instructions at the top of these pages. All Linda asks, in return for her time and talent, is that you make a donation to our Shelter. You can use the PayPal buttons to the right, send us a check (SPCHS, POB 101, Long Beach, WA 98631), drop by the Shelter, or even buy a raffle ticket (ten are just $20 and you could win a prize worth $1,000)!

Breakers pet fees fund donation to Peninsula’s no-kill shelter
Chinook Observer, 06/24/09Cutler Management, Inc., managing agent for the Breakers, a beachfront condominium resort in north Long Beach, made a donation of more than $1,000 to South Pacific County Humane Society (SPCHS) in Long Beach this week. The ceremony was marked with a check presentation and photos Monday afternoon.
After deciding at the end of last year to donate a portion of collected pet fees, the total sum of the fees for the first half of 2009 have been rounded up by Cutler Management to present to the no-kill shelter. Fees are collected by most pet-friendly lodging establishments, ranging from $10 to $50 per night on average.
“Pet fees here on the Peninsula are typically lower than we find elsewhere in the state,” noted Una Boyle, executive director of the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau. “We are a very pet-friendly community, with many merchants welcoming dogs in their stores and providing biscuits and water for their canine customers. Having a no-kill shelter is something this community should be very proud of and the Breakers sets a great example by donating their pet fees.”
Said Mike Litawa, president of Cutler Management and second vice president of the shelter: “It is great to be able to welcome dogs onto our lawns, dunes and beach and at the same time generate money that goes towards helping homeless pets in our local community.”
From data entry to event planning, management and execution, board service, paperwork, fundraising and more, Cutler Management offers up hundreds of staff hours each year to the cause of finding forever homes for lost and surrendered pets in need of a new family. Cutler Management Business Manager Michelle Zinkevics is new to the SPCHS Board of Directors this year, “I’ve been involved with shelters in other communities and I am really impressed with the way this community supports its Humane Society. It costs a lot to keep the doors open and, month after month, from coins dropped in donation jars to writing checks, to supporting events and fundraisers, this community pays the bills.”
“Every dollar makes a difference” is written across the bottom of the hand-written thank-you notes board members Keleigh Schwartz and Harriet Cavalli send out weekly. Based on the many avenues this organization works to receive funds, it would seem to be true. Bequests and planned giving are boosts to the bottom line and the organization holds a number of events throughout the year, as well as an annual raffle, to raise the nearly $11,000 per month it costs to operate frugally. Donors sponsor pets for adoption and many of these are ‘paid forward’ with the pet’s adopter paying the fee for another pet before taking their new family member home. Memorial plaques hang on the wall of the shelter’s lobby, another fundraiser. Donations of hand-crafted goods are often at the front counter for sale and donation jars can be found throughout the community.
In addition to cash donations, a wish list can be found on www.beachpets.com, the shelter’s Web site. Board President Keleigh Schwartz is quick with an answer, when asked what is needed at the moment. “Kitty litter and pet food, especially kitten and puppy food and milk. We were so fortunate last year that 100 percent of our pet food was donated. One bag, one dollar at a time, SPCHS donors, staff and volunteers get the job done.”

I’d like to share some wonderful photos of Abbeys’ on her 6-month anniversary with us.
My husband & I had recently lost our beloved 12 year old white German shepherd to lymphoma and saw Abbeys’ adorable photo in the Bow Wow [News]. We anguished over the “baggage” of adopting a stray but felt like if she would give us a chance we could go that extra mile for her
So over the bridge from Cannon Beach we went- through the ice, and horizontal winds over the Christmas holiday storms to meet Diana and our future member of our family.
I’m so pleased to say that her pros far outweigh her cons & we are delighted every day that she is with us. We’ve so enjoyed her sparkle as she explores new territories (beach, mountains, and so much more!!) and develop into such a delightful companion.
I’d also like to extend a special thank you to you & your volunteers for all the work you do for these very special animals.
Cheers
Margaret

Physical Address: 1610 Pacific Ave., Tillamook, OR 97141

Ocean Front Cabins were established in the early 20′s. When they first opened there were both cottages and tent houses available and the road to get to Oceanside was nothing but dirt and wood planks. In 1943 there were 40 cabins and they were called Kirk’s Motel. Through the years there have been many changes to Oceanside. The cabins have had changes made as well. One difference is that there are now only seven cabins. There numbers are 17-23. A remnant of days gone by. When looking at the surrounding hillside you can still pick out homes that were formerly part of Kirk’s.
In 1989, John and Patricia De Ruyter purchased the cottages. They were given a new name and the innkeeper’s residence was turned into a coffee house. Over the past several years, the cabins have been getting spruced up and, although the cabins have been renovated, they still hold the charm that comes with having stood the elements for over 80 years.
In fact all of Oceanside is like a step back in time. There are no shops or large commercial buildings, just a restaurant, tavern, post office a few motels and bed and breakfasts and a coffeehouse. What Oceanside is lacking in modern facilities it more than compensates in lack of crowds, beautiful beaches and stunning scenery.
Oceanside is truly a hidden gem. John and Patricia would love to have you come and stay with them while you discover its secrets and the incredible value of this quiet getaway.
