If you want someone who will eat whatever you put in front of him
and never say its not quite as good as his mother’s

att1111

..then adopt a dog.

If you want someone always willing to go out, at any hour,
for as long and wherever you want …

att222

..then adopt a dog.

If you want someone who will never touch the remote, doesn’t care
about football, and can sit next to you as you watch romantic movies

att333

..then adopt a dog.

If you want someone who is content to get on your bed just to
warm your feet and whom you can push off if he snores

att444

..then adopt a dog !

If you want someone who never criticizes what you do, doesn’t care
if you are pretty or ugly, fat or thin, young or old, who acts as if
every word you say is especially worthy of listening to, and loves
you unconditionally, perpetually ..

att5551

..then adopt a dog.

BUT, on the other hand, if you want someone who will never come
when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair
all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night and only
comes home to eat and sleep, and acts as if your entire existence
is solely to ensure his happiness .,

..then adopt a cat!

The kittens are arriving!

Late this past week, we got in our first little family of kittens, accompanied by their very attentive, but much too young mama. Mom is a glossy black girl; two of her kittens look just like her; one is Siamese in coloring, and the remaining two are very cutely-marked black and white charmers.

Of course, this little bunch represents just the “kick-off” of kitten season, and we will be getting more small arrivals throughout spring and summer.

If you have wanted a kitten and all the enjoyment and companionship a kitten can bring, come in and see our “first family”. We also will be keeping a “kitten wanted’ list at the shelter, so if you are looking for a particular type of tiny tiger, just let us know and we can contact you if we have an arrival that might be just the ticket!

These rescued dogs have their own Olympic-sized gene pool

When Oregon Humane Society went to a community in Eastern Oregon a couple of weeks ago to rescue a group of dogs, the “group” turned out to actually be over 200 dogs representing the largest dog hoarding situation in Oregon history.

All the TV news channels broadcast the rescue, and many of us saw in detail the deplorable conditions in which these dogs were living. As she did for another group of hoarded dogs living in squalor in this same community just a few weeks ago, our Humane Society volunteer Melanie Epping went to work and helped bring about the rescue of these dogs.

She brought back to our shelter 4 of the dogs, and we have been amusing ourselves trying to figure out just what breeds they are. The three small golden-colored dogs are either very young dogs or puppies- we aren’t quite sure until we can get them in for their vet checkup.

dsc05694

At this point, you can see that they look like miniature golden retrievers, but with more pointed noses. The hoarder had a lot of different breeds of dogs on his property, and it is very possible these cute little guys might be something like Shiba Inu/ Doxie mixes.

We are not dismissing the thought that any number of interesting dog breeds may have been swimming in this gene pool!

What we do know, though, is that these pups are very sweet, but a little shy. They absolutely adore quiet attention, and are getting more outgoing all the time. Because of the living situation they were in, the pups will need some extra vet care, but will thrive with some TLC.

If you saw this rescue situation on TV, or even if you didn’t but are sympathetic to the plight of the animals involved, please consider contributing towards the care of these needy pups. Or, donate money to Oregon Humane Society to help them care for the scores of dogs they brought into their shelter.

And, please come in and meet these pups- they are all looking for their well-deserved new start on life and for someone to love them.

PAWfect Connections Prison Dog Program

South Pacific County Humane Society was Cate’s third shelter.  She simply wasn’t finding a forever home.   Then, a happy day came for Cate!  PAWfect Connections selected her to be a part of their Prison Dogs program.  Cate, now Mattie, is being trained by offenders to meet the AKC Good Citizen K9 standards.  This will make her an exceptional family pet and maybe even a service or therapy dog.

We’re rooting for you, Mattie!

You Can Win One Of Two Great Coastal Get-Aways This Month!

But there are only 15 Days Left to participate.

Here’s the scoop. Each month we support a local non-profit. This month, March, we are supporting the local Humane Society. We are doing three things to help them. First, we publicize their efforts. Second, 10% of each Tuesday night’s sales are donated to them. And, third, we hold a raffle all month long the proceeds of which are donated entirely to them. In this way, anyone dining with us can still contribute to their efforts.
And you will benefit no matter how you contribute to their efforts. Two people will win a coastal get-away in the raffle drawing: one to the Inn at Spanish Head on the Oregon coast and one to the Breakers Resort here on the Long Beach peninsula. Also, we are rewarding Double Dining Points for every dollar spent on Raffle tickets and on Tuesday Evening to our Royalty/Repeat Rewards Members! And, if your not a member will fix it so you are.
Hope to see you tonight and many time before the 31st. There is already over $200.00 in the raffle. We are hoping to break $400.00 for them with just the raffle.

OO & XX from all of us,
the Fools for Flavor at 42nd Street.

All in the family- unfortunately…

Recently, a very well-liked and kind woman who had lived in our community for over 25 years, passed away, much too soon.
Her passing left a lot of sadness in the hearts of her family and her many friends. She was, her friends said, “someone you could always count on to help and to be there for you”.
Sadly, she left not only friends, but also her beloved kitties “Smokey” and “Hitchhiker”, and her loyal canine companion”Sweetie”.
All three of these pets are now at the shelter, and it is very obvious that they are grieving for the loss of their owner and the home they loved.
Those of us at the shelter who have pets (and that pretty much covers everyone!) talk frequently about what might happen to our pets if we pass away, because we see this scenario all too often.
We all would like to think that someone in our families or someone among our friends, knowing just how much we loved our pets, would step up to the plate and see that the dogs or cats we leave behind find new homes to help heal the grief of losing us.
This is what we are hoping will happen for Smokey, Hitchhiker, and Sweetie…
If you or someone you know would like to honor this loving woman’s memory by helping to find her pets new homes, please stop by the shelter and let’s talk.

Annie is anxious to be a” lap top ‘’cat

This lovely and very sweet tuxedo girl scores an A-plus in the affection department. She adores people, and her idea of heaven is any time she can spend sitting on someone’s lap, purring.
Annie is young, healthy, and has good manners. She came to the shelter last “kitten season” and went to a foster home to raise her babies.

Her kittens all found good homes, and now she is very much wishing for a home, and most importantly, a lap of her own. She would love a home, maybe with a retired person, where she could give and get a lot of attention and companionship.

Benefit for Humane Society at 42nd St. Café
As a part of the 42nd St Café Community Service program, the Humane Society will receive a percentage of the profits from meals served at the restaurant on Tuesday nights during the month of March.
We will also have a display at the restaurant featuring a raffle we will be having for two fantastic entertainment/lodging packages:

Two nights lodging @ Inn at Spanish Head
Wine tasting at The Flying Dutchman Winery with
winery owner Richard Cutter

Two nights lodging @ Inn at The Breakers
Bottle of Flying Dutchman wine

Tickets for the raffle are a dollar each; 6 for $5.00; 20 for $15.00, and 35 for $20.00, and all proceeds benefit the Humane Society. The drawing for these two packages, valued at $300 each, will be held at the end of March. Come out for a great meal and show your support for the shelter animals!

Coral- this loving lady hound is an “easy keeper”

dsc05438
Frankly, sometimes hound breeds can be a little hard to live with as good pets. Bred to run and chase, they can get so caught up in what they are doing that they don’t pay much attention to their human companions.

Coral, though, is just the flip side of this story- she is very calm, well-mannered, and very attentive and affectionate with people. We got her as a stray from another shelter, so we don’t have any real past history on this young Plott hound mix. But what we do know is what we have learned about her since she has been with us.

She has become a favorite of shelter staff and volunteers alike because of her easy-going nature, and we know we can count on her to be nice with other dogs, cats, and people of all ages. Coral is a great size, weighing in at a trim and athletic 45 pounds or so. She has a beautiful short brindle coat, in keeping with her easy keeper ways. Coral loves to go for walks, and likes to cuddle- this girl is all about the attention! She is hoping someone will come along she can count on to be there for her, and with whom she can share her love and loyalty.
Andy Griffith is still searching for his Opie

dsc05574
Several weeks ago, we wrote about “Andy”, a very nice “aw, shucks” kind of dog that reminds us of his namesake Andy Griffith. Sadly, the weeks he is at the shelter continue to roll by, and no one has come forward for Andy.

Andy is a five year old lab mix, and has all the great characteristics that make labs such good family dogs. He LOVES kids, and would be delighted to be in a home with children. Andy is also good with other dogs, and is not aggressive with cats.

He has all these great personality traits that make a dog a good companion, but what he does not have is a home of his own. It makes us sad to see his face when he greets visitors at the shelter, only to have them walk away without him. We are very much hoping that we won’t have to watch him be so disappointed much longer…

Shelter wish list
We would be very grateful to receive donations of kitty litter- the traditional clay Tidy Cat or Johnny Cat type. We are getting ready for kitten season, and are running very low on litter.
Thank you for your loyal support and for caring so much about the animals!
