PET REPORT By Cory McKeown with photos by Melanie Epping

Sometimes the pets we receive at the shelter, particularly the ones that have once known homes of their own, take it hard when they lose that home. They go into what we call “heartbroken syndrome”, and it can be very difficult for us to know whether the pet is actually ill, or just mourning a past life.
Such was the case with this sweet little tabby “Kelly”. She came to us when her elderly owner could no longer care for her. It was apparent from the start that she was very unhappy to be away from home. She cried and chattered almost non-stop for the first few days, and then she began to just sit in a corner, all hunched up.
We weren’t sure if her sadness was causing her withdrawal, or if she was getting sick. So, we do what we do in these instances, and took her for a vet check. The diagnosis:” she looks good on paper”, meaning her lab tests and exam came out fine.
This means that the “medicine” this lonely but very affectionate kitty really needs doesn’t come in a bottle. It will come from the heart of the person who is willing to meet her and take her home. And most importantly, to give her the love she needs to feel better.

Ah, the exuberance of sweet young dogs!
Spring is almost springing, and in keeping with the new season, we have just received some wonderful new dogs, all young, and all totally in love with life and with people. Several of them are pretty black lab/lab mixes, and we have a nice girl Aussie mix, also. “Jasmine” here is a charming pointer/mix pup, with a potpourri of polka dots scattered over her wiggly body. All of these dogs are delighted with attention from people, and are anxious to please and to learn.
These young dogs so much want to belong to someone, and will have years of love and loyalty to offer. Please come and introduce yourself and your family to one of these sweet pups- it could be the start of a wonderful relationship!
