Timmer is Living Proof: Even “F.L.D.’s “Can Make Wonderful Pets!!!

Timmer is one of those dogs we affectionately call “F.L.D.’s” – short for “funny-looking dogs”. Often these dogs have a gene pool that shows a lot of imagination- in Timmer’s case, he has both features of a Corgi and most probably Chow- taller than most Corgis, but with a beautiful red Chow coat and spotted tongue.

timmer.jpg

One’s first impression of him might be that yes, he is indeed an F.L.D. in the truest sense of the term. But, spend a little time with him, and “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” comes to mind. This delightful 2 year old neutered male is affectionate, calm, smart, and very eager to please.

He would make a wonderful and attentive canine companion, and would probably do best in a quieter home and with older, gentle children or adults. Timmer loves to go for walks, and is healthy, housebroken, and very good on a leash.

If he sounds like the dog for you, come and meet him- it won’t be long before you see his great personality and realize that he is actually a very charming dog, gene pool and all!

Fergie, Avril and Darth

These darling kittens might all have famous names, but unfortunately, right now their only claim to fame is that they are the last kittens left at the shelter from the summer kitten season. They have spent far too much of their young lives in cages, and very much need homes of their own.

avril-fergie.jpg

Please help them find homes before they grow up in the shelter. Before they are still left lingering here in the spring, when the next kitten season hits. There is nothing wrong with this little trio of kittens- unfortunately, someone has to be last, and that someone is them- they would be loving additions to any home.

Shelter Pets Host Super Bowl Party!!

The dogs and cats here at the shelter got together, and decided that not everyone is glued to the television watching Super Bowl- that for some folks it would be a good time to party!!! So, the pets are hosting a Super Bowl party next Saturday, February 2, from 11am-2pm at the shelter. The pets pooled their money( with some help from the volunteers) and are popping for party refreshments, prizes, and games. Come and enjoy the party, and of course, the dogs and cats are hoping partygoers might also be interested in adopting a nice pet! See you there!

Payton is a wonderful “easy-keeper”

payton450.jpg

As anyone will tell you who has ever brought home a puppy or untrained dog, these pooches can be a lot of work and cause considerable frustration for the new owner. For people who have neither the time nor the inclination to take on the task of training, great well-mannered dogs like Payton are just the ticket!

This seven year old Lab/Husky (?) mix is affectionate, calm, intelligent, and has a demeanor “Miss Manners” would give an A+. Payton is a staff favorite and it is easy to see why – no “nonsense barking,” no chewing or jumping, just people-pleasing behavior from this guy. He loves everyone, is good with the other dogs, seems good with cats and is a delight to walk on a leash.

Payton has been at the shelter for far too long – what a waste it is that he lingers here. When someone stops by his cage to talk to him, he gives them his full attention, gazing into their eyes and often quietly raising one paw as if to say: “Please take me home. I am such a good dog and I would fill your life with love and joy. I just need the chance.” Will you be the one to give this wonderful dog a chance?

Sweet William has been too long without a home of his own

cats.jpg

This very nice young kitty arrived at the shelter last summer and has watched for months as the kittens have come and gone. He loves kittens, as you can see by this picture and has acted as a loving “dad cat” to lonely kittens in the playroom.

William is a handsome tiger cat who sports one tattered ear – evidence of his past hard life when he had to fight on the streets to survive. But, Sweet William lives up to his name and is a lover, not a fighter. He is mellow and likes just about everyone, people of all ages and other kitties. He would be a great companion in a home with another non-aggressive cat, or maybe his very favorite, a kitten!

Please come and ask to meet William – he also has been lingering here far too long and has a lot of love to give!

Shelter Wish List

We want to say a sincere “thank you” to the wonderful folks who have been bringing us the great dog collars. Our dogs have an on-going need for sturdy collars, and any future collar donations would be very much appreciated.

fixcatfree.gifAs spring waits just around the comer, it is time for the Humane Society to launch our annual “Fix Your Cat for Free” campaign – a program to provide free spaying and neutering of cats belonging to low-income local owners. For the past several years, we have been able to decrease the number of unwanted kittens in our community by providing free altering to about 80 cats each spring. Just one unspayed female cat can produce to 10 to 15 kittens annually, and sadly, there are not enough homes for them all. Unwanted kittens live short and often miserable lives, the victims of starvation, disease, predators and accidents. We would be very grateful to receive donations in support of this program. Please earmark donations to the “Fix Your Cat” program. Thank you very much.

It’s Time to Fall in Puppy Love!!

puppies.jpg

We have darling puppies again awaiting adoption to good homes. There are four girls and two boys in this little canine family, and they are about nine weeks old. The pups are truly mixed breed- perhaps a combination of Shepherd, yellow lab, and husky. Also, rumor has it that Daddy may have been a traveling salesman from Chow City….

They are very healthy and playful, and adore attention from people. The pups should be medium/large to large dogs and ideal canine companions for individuals or families. They have their first shots, will soon be spayed and neutered, and ready to come home! See these puppies on Petfinder.com.

R.C. – This “Bandito” is Ready to Steal Your Heart

rc.jpg

This young Cattle Dog was found several weeks ago, running up the road wearing a harness and trailing a leash. No one has come to claim him, and now he is up for adoption.

He is a very friendly and extremely intelligent dog, and his “raccoon eyes” markings make him look like he might be up to something- hopefully stealing someone’s heart and finding a good home.

R.C. loves to go for walks, is housetrained, seems good with cats and other dogs, and has some basic training. He is so smart and anxious to please, and should take readily to further training. He is athletic and a great size- about 40 pounds.

This “Bandito” would make a wonderful hiking companion, and would fit nicely into an active household or even as a loyal buddy for a single person or couple. Come and spend some time with R.C. – if he is the dog for you, he will steal your heart! R.C. on Petfinder.com

SPCHS St Patrick’s Dinner Auction Extravaganza
Procurement meeting

Date: Wednesday January 16th
Time: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Location: Western Coastal Mortgage Conference Room

(1517 Pacific Ave N, Long Beach)

Auction procurement supplies have arrived. This meeting will be to hand out materials, answer questions and get community volunteered started. Countdown: 67 days until Auction Night

Those of you who have signed up to do procurement, it is important that you attend this meeting. If it is impossible for you to attend, please make arrangements to pick up your supplies.

This email is going out to all who have shown an interest in the auction. If each of you could donate or procure one or two items for the silent or live auction, it would help us to have a smashing success. We would appreciate your assistance whether you can give the event a small or large amount of your time and talent, your help is needed and will be appreciated. Contact Marie or Bonnie to make arrangements for delivery.

What Can You Donate?
Alongside the donations we receive from the community, we need individuals to donate items for the silent and live auction. There are endless possibilities here…

A ‘Girl’s Night In’ –

Three daring husbands offer to wait ‘hand and foot’ on 20 ladies. The men cook dinner, serve cocktails and clean up after – what more could you want?

Host a party - a simple cocktail hour in your home, or hors d’oevres on a boat, or a picnic in the woods… anything else your imagination can come up with…

We’d LOVE to have vacations to sell
– do you know someone with a beach house or a time-share in Hawaii. Think about backpacking, sailing trips, road trips, ski weekends, fishing vacations, kayaking adventures, camping, flying, and sightseeing… Anyone know how to get hold of airline tickets? What about getting a cruise to Alaska? A trip to Disneyland would raise a fortune!

Are you a great cook?
Food always sells, so how about donating a special cake, bread or cookies or even going to someone’s home to cook a gourmet meal.

Do you like Gardening? A few hours work in someone else’s yard is a real money-spinner.

What about those Seahawks / Sonics or tickets
to ?? Maybe you have Season tickets and would donate a game or two. Or a signed ball?

Know anyone who can get us tickets to the Opera or a Play
? How about Gift Certificates for a meal or maybe you have connections with hotels in the Seattle/Portland/Vancouver or another vacation city and could get a room for the weekend? Gas Vouchers?

Can you donate your services?
Graphic Design, Accounting, Hard Labor, Construction, Massage, Handyman, Housecleaning, Yard Services. Hair or Nail Beauty Care, Animal Sitting, House Sitting, Child Party Entertainment … the list is never-ending

Other items that are the mainstay of our auction are:
Art, Wine, Vacations, Cars, Makeovers, Kids Stuff, Animal toys and equipment, Jewelry, Sports Equipment, Specialty Food or other Gift Baskets…

The sky’s the limit. Let your imagination run wild. The animals at the Shelter will benefit from any or all that you do to make the auction a success.

Pet Personals:
Lively Canine Kids Seeking Active Human Kids for Fun and Companionship!!

canine kid

These adorable girl pups approach life with such enthusiasm and exuberance that everyone who sees them just has to smile. They are Manchester Terrier/Lab mixes (so we have been told), and should be nice medium sized dogs, probably 30-45 pounds.
These garrulous girls are very active, affectionate, and healthy, and have glossy, easy-care short coats.

The pups would love to find homes with active people, and would wiggle themselves inside out to have a place that included kind kids as playmates- what a wonderful bonus this would be for them!

Come and see these darling puppies- even if you can’t leave with one, we guarantee that you will at least enjoy their antics and leave with a smile on your face!!

Gorgeous Ginger and her Pretty Plaid Kittens

Ginger Kittens

Ginger is a very pretty, sweet, and unusual-looking calico cat. She has a beautiful white background coat with cute patches of tabby and calico areas. Her three girl kittens are equally as pretty, and when one looks at their markings, the description of “plaid” comes to mind. Very exotic looking.

Mama Ginger and the girls have all been spayed and are ready to come to their new forever homes. Ginger is one of those Mom Cats that seems to love her kittens no matter how old they are ( hers are about 10 weeks old now), and it would be great if she could be adopted with one or more of her babies.

Please visit Ginger and the other kitties at the shelter awaiting good homes.
