JeffreyJeffrey: His happiness is contagious!

This six-month-old Lab mix always seems to have a smile on his face. He loves to meet new people and greets everyone with enthusiasm. Jeffrey is a beautiful reddish blond in color and has a wonderfully glossy, very short coat.

He is energetic, as are all puppies, but calms down nicely with just a little attention. He would be a great family dog and would love the company of older children and other non-aggressive pets. This handsome pup is very anxious to please and is just waiting to share his perpetually happy outlook. He will surely brighten his new owner’s life!

Kittens for the holidays

kittens It seems like we are having a very late “kitten season” this year and should have wonderful kittens of all colors and descriptions even through the holidays.

We have several little feline families that are with their mamas, and we ask that people who come to the shelter looking for kittens also consider adopting a mom cat. Most of these little mamas are just barely past kittenhood themselves – we call this “babies having babies.” Unfortunately, no one cared enough for them to have them spayed, so they became pregnant, often fending for themselves until they were brought into the shelter.

Adopting a mom cat that is still affectionate and caring with her kittens and one or more of her babies together can be a very enjoyable experience – truly adopting a family, if you will!

Please come in and see our sweet little felines soon.

It’s “Hooooowwwler-ween!

Humane Society volunteers will be at all three local supermarkets this Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., manning donation tables.

We are hoping that shoppers at Jack’s, Okie’s and Sid’s will also do some shopping for the pets at the shelter while they are buying groceries. Our wish list for this event includes toilet paper, laundry soap, paper towels, 13-gallon trash bags, canned dog and cat food, Pedigree dry dog food, non-scoopable clay kitty litter, like Tidy or Johnny Cat, and Gerber’s meat baby food, chicken or turkey. Why the baby food? It is a wonderful supplement for sick kitties and tiny kittens.

Tickets for our raffle (drawing coming up Nov. 3!) will also be available – remember, we have some great prizes and just two bucks could change your luck – and the luck of the pets at the shelter!

Thank you for your generosity

We would like to express our gratitude to the Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for their recent donation to the Humane Society. The funds will be put to good use caring for the needy shelter animals. We sincerely appreciate the thoughtfulness.

Chaylen: A Beautiful “Faux” Manx

Chaylen

This very pretty young Calico girl was brought to the local veterinarians after someone found her horribly injured. She had a broken rear leg, and her tail was badly mangled. Perhaps the result of being hit by a car or mauled by a dog or coyote – no one will ever know for sure.Chaylen got wonderful care at Oceanside Animal Clinic, where they carefully casted her leg. Her tail though was a different story. It was so badly mauled, that Dr. Ketel knew it could not be saved in its entirety. So, he trimmed away the non-viable tissue, and made her into a Manx! A “faux” Manx, yes, but a pretty darned good-looking bobtail Manx at that!Chaylen went into foster care with one of our kennel assistants, where she got the TLC she needed to complete her healing. Foster mom Emily describes Chaylen as “one of the sweetest kitties I have ever cared for.”

This beautiful Calico is now in our kitty playroom, awaiting a loving home. Her leg has healed well, and she is ready to start a new, and hopefully safer and happier life. She would be a very loving addition to any home.

Arnie is Little Shy at First

Arnie

Arnie is one of our quieter, more reflective dogs. Unlike some of the dogs that jump and bark excitedly in their kennels when people approach, this young shepherd/beagle mix stands quietly and looks intently at the newcomers. He is slower to warm up to strangers, but once he gets to know someone, his truly loving character comes to light. He wants nothing more than to have someone talk to him quietly, and take some time to get to know him. All the while, he will look right into your eyes with his big brown eyes, as if to say, “I am worth your taking a little extra time with me.”Arnie would be the ideal dog for someone wanting a quieter, yet very loyal and loving dog. Please come and meet him – take a little extra time and get to know this gentle soul. He could be the dog you have been waiting for.

Many Thanks

We would like to thank dog trainer Tina Woodworth for providing a free obedience session last month to dogs adopted from the shelter. Quite a few adoptive owners took advantage of this great opportunity to help their dogs become better-behaved members of the family. Thank you, Tina. The Humane Society is also grateful to Father Blaine Hammond, who came to the shelter last Saturday to bless the shelter animals as well as several pets brought in by their owners. The shelter staff felt better knowing the homeless pets had received a blessing, and the pet owners were also very appreciative that their beloved pets had been blessed. Thank you, Father Hammond.

Shelter Wish List

We are very grateful to have been receiving donations of canned cat food and kitty litter, both still much-needed items, as we have quite a few cats and kittens right now.Cash donations are also a wonderful gift to help with veterinary bills and to provide care to our special needs cats and dogs, giving them the extra support they need to be as healthy and happy as possible. Thank you for caring.

Humane Society President James Galbreath, left, is seen here giving a “giant thank-you” to Vinny and Cara Ciaramella, new owners of HillTop Bowl in Ilwaco. The Ciaramellas raised $718.00 for the Humane Society by donating a dollar for each game bowled at their lanes in the month of August.

Bowling Check

bowlingspchs-letter4c_v2sm.gif

The pet-loving couple originally hails from Boston, and took over the HillTop bowl on July 1. They are emphasizing a relaxed, family-friendly environment at their new business, which will be open seven days a week and feature more open bowling games.

The Ciaramellas have three much-loved and spoiled kitties of their own, and wanted to do something to help the less fortunate animals at the shelter. Their wonderful donation is a great example of how the members of the community so generously support the Humane Society and the needy animals in our care.
In turn, we hope the community will welcome this thoughtful and civic-minded couple by supporting their new business endeavor. Please support our business supporters!!!

Shelter Wish List

We are very grateful to have received the bags of Purina Kitten Chow this past week. Currently, the kitties would very much appreciate donations of canned cat food and traditional clay (not scoopable) litter, such as Johnny Cat or Tidy Cat, and the dogs would love to get some kibbled food, Pedigree or Kirkland brands. Thank-you for caring.

Baybee is a Lover Girl

Baybee

As a breed, Labs are known for their loving dispositions and people-pleasing ways. Baybee is a one and a half year old Lab mix, and she is no exception to the rule. She is exceptionally sweet and gentle, and wants nothing more in life than to cuddle and be petted. She loves to bury her head into people’s arms, and doesn’t want to be let go.

Baybee would be an ideal family dog, and though she is large, would be good with even the smaller members of the family due to her very gentle nature.

Come and ask to meet this pretty Lab- she is just waiting to share her love.

Oliver- Homely but Still a Hottie!!

Oliver

No, you don’t need to adjust your TV picture- this is really the way I look! If you were to look up “special needs, homely cat” in the dictionary, my picture would be in there!

My name is Oliver, and my life story started out a little sad, but would get much better if I found a loving home.

I was rescued by the Humane Society from a run-down trailer park, and I was half-dead from starvation and a respiratory infection. I had to spend a week at the veterinarians, but I got better, and am now at the shelter waiting for my forever home.

My ears are forever tattered from previous battles to survive, and I will always have a snuffy nose. I think I must be part Siamese, because I have baby-blue eyes and a cream-colored coat.

But, as it is said about some “appearance-challenged” people, the way I look is only the outside wrapper- I have a Wonderful personality! I am exceptionally sweet and affectionate- I am a real character, and although I am no longer a kitten, I love to play.

And oh, did I mention I am also a little hard of hearing? Surely there is a kind, maybe also hard of hearing person out there who is willing to take me home and just speak up a little bit when talking to me!

Because of my chronic respiratory condition, I probably should go to a home with no other cats. And due to my diminished hearing, a home in town with a fenced yard would be much safer for me. I am used to being an inside/outside kitty, and would not be happy kept strictly indoors. I do enjoy the companionship of other pets, though, and I am used to dogs and I even like them!

Please come and take me home- I may be homely, but I have a hottie personality. And, if I hear “oh Oliver, you’re so ugly you’re cute” one more time from the women here at the shelter, I am going to scream! Rescue me, please!

Shelter Wish List

We would be very grateful to receive donations of dry dog food, Kirkland or Pedigree brands, also Purina Kitten Chow for our fall crop of kittens. Thanks for thinking of the homeless animals, and for your support and donations.

Young “Parti” cocker twins are ready to party!
By Cory McKeown with photos by Melanie Epping & Cory McKeown

Cocker Spaniel SiblingsThis very pretty cocker spaniel brother and sister duo is indeed active and playful, and would love to be the hit of your next party! But, other than their wonderful zest for life, their bi-color coat pattern distinguishes them as “Parti” pattern cockers.

The two spaniels are about a year and a half old, and seem to love everyone. They are very attached to each other, and it would be best if they could go to the same home. They interact wonderfully with each other, and are a joy to watch as they play with their toys. We wish we knew more about them, but they came from another shelter with very little information. Just by looking at them, though, several things are obvious: they are beautiful and sweet young dogs, and would add immense enjoyment to someone’s life.

A scratching post from someone’s heart

The post was left under our covered porch area over the weekend when the shelter was closed. It was obvious that this anonymous donor is a person who cares about animals. The toy was freshly reconditioned, with new carpet, a sturdy plywood base, and most wonderful of all, with a colorful pom-pom just perfect for batting attached to the top. Whomever did this put his or her heart into it, and was also kind enough to donate a kitty “grooming arch” toy.KittensWe want to be sure our supporters know how much your donations mean to us and to the needy animals in our care. Something as simple as this small scratching post can add tremendously to the quality of life for a caged animal. With a post such as this, the kittens have a whole new dimension in their lives – now not only can they zing around their cages playing with toys, they can go up! And down! And up again! It is wonderful stimulation for them, and we make sure they promise not to use their newly found climbing abilities on the drapes in their new homes.Speaking of kittens, the new fall crop has arrived! Some people don’t know that the arrival of kittens is seasonal, but it really is. The main group of kittens for the year are born in late spring and early summer, and another smaller group is born in the early fall. We have some delightful “fall arrivals” right now – all colors and patterns – tigers, “peachies,” tuxedos, black – all playful and people-pleasing. Come in and watch them play – even better, find them a place in your heart and home!

Shelter Wish List

Due to the influx of the fall kitten “crop,” we would be very grateful to once again receive donations of Purina Kitten Chow. It is very nice to be able to feed the little ones a consistent diet – if they are fed a diet of several different brands or types of food; they tend to get digestive upsets, much like human babies in the same situation.Cash donations are also especially needed now to help us provide the shelter animals with the veterinary care they need to be comfortable and to thrive. Thank you for caring.
